How many porta potties do I need for my event?

You need about one standard porta potty for every 200 expected uses, which is guests times hours divided by 200. A 100-guest, 5-hour event needs 100 × 5 ÷ 200 = 2.5, rounded up to 3 units. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served, and 1 hand washing station per 3 toilets when food is served.

What are you planning?
4 toilets + 2 hand wash

What method does the calculator use?

The calculator uses a 200-uses-per-unit planning number for a standard porta potty with a 60-gallon tank, assuming each guest uses the restroom about once an hour. Alcohol raises use, so we add 1 unit for every 4. The accessible count follows the 2010 ADA Standards. Jobsite counts follow OSHA Table D-1.

  • Event base: guests × hours ÷ 200, rounded up, minimum 1.
  • Alcohol: add 1 unit for every 4 units, minimum 1. If the table says 5 units, add 1 for alcohol, for 6.
  • Food: add 1 hand washing station for every 3 toilets.
  • Accessible: at least 5% of units in each cluster, minimum 1 (2010 ADA Standards §213.2), when restrooms are provided for the public.
  • Jobsite: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. 20 or fewer workers = 1; 21–199 = 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40; 200+ = 1 per 50.

Official sources: OSHA 1926.51 and the 2010 ADA Standards. These are minimums and planning numbers; your venue or permit office has the final say.

How many porta potties do I need for 100, 150 or 200 guests?

For a 5-hour event, 100 guests need 3 standard porta potties, 150 guests need 4, and 200 guests need 5, before adding for alcohol. With a bar, those become 4, 5 and 6. Each count includes rounding up, and each setup should include at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit.

Counts from guests × 5 hours ÷ 200, rounded up; alcohol adds 1 per 4 units (min. 1); hand wash = 1 per 3 toilets.

Worked example: a 150-guest wedding with a bar, 5 hours

  1. 150 × 5 = 750 expected uses.
  2. 750 ÷ 200 = 3.75, rounded up to 4 units.
  3. Alcohol: 4 units ÷ 4 = 1 more unit, for 5.
  4. Food: 5 ÷ 3 = 1.7, rounded up to 2 hand washing stations.
  5. Accessible: 5% of 5 is less than 1, so 1 of the 5 units is wheelchair-accessible.

How many porta potties does a construction crew need?

A construction crew of 20 or fewer workers needs 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c). Crews of 21 to 199 need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Crews of 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. Each of our standard units has one seat and one urinal.

Minimums from OSHA Table D-1. Our service column is a recommendation for 40-hour weeks.

Do event length and crowd type change the count?

Yes. Longer events need more units because uses pile up hour by hour. Crowds that drink, crowds with many women and children, and events where everyone breaks at once (halftime, intermission) need more. Low-turnover crowds, like a seated church picnic, can run a little lighter.

When in doubt, round up. An extra unit costs far less than a line at the restroom during the toast or the halftime break.

Sizing questions

These {'porta potty'} answers are short on purpose: the answer first, then any condition that changes it. They cover the details renters usually check before paying. Still unsure about your own site or dates? Call (803) 343-9386 and get a straight answer from the Aiken office.

How many porta potties for 50 people?

One standard unit covers 50 guests for up to 4 hours. For 5–8 hours, or with alcohol, use 2.

How many porta potties for a 300-person festival?

For a 6-hour festival, 300 × 6 ÷ 200 = 9 units. With beer sales, add 2 for 11. Make at least 1 accessible per cluster and add 4 hand washing stations near food.

Does a restroom trailer count as more than one unit?

A 2-stall restroom trailer handles roughly the uses of 2 to 3 standard units, because guests move faster with flush toilets and sinks.

Do I need more units for an all-day tailgate?

Yes. Use the full hours guests are on site, not just the race or game time. A 7-hour tailgate for 100 is 4 units.

How many units for a 30-person crew working 6 days a week?

OSHA requires 1 unit for 21–40 workers. A 6-day week fills a unit faster, so book twice-weekly service or add a second unit.
